Ceramic lids from archaeological materials in the city of Yeniseysk

Бесплатный доступ

More than 160 ceramic lids and their fragments were discovered during archaeological excavations carried out in Yeniseysk located on the border between East Siberia and West Siberia in 2015-2018 (Fig. 1). Two thirds of the items are vessels lids, one third of the collection are identified as chimney dampers. As these lids turned out to be frequent finds which had not been regarded as a separate research object we focused on the lids as one of ceramic types. The paper provides references to publications where lids are mentioned among archaeological finds. Some of the earliest items were discovered in Ancient Greece and China. Most likely, the spread of lids in Northwestern and Central Europe was linked to replacement of open hearths with closed hearths. The subject requires further research.
