Ceramic spindle whorls from Galechnoe-1, Sargat culture

In this article we introduce a series of ceramic spindle whorls found at the Sargat culture settlement site of Galechnoe-1 into scientific circulation. This site was discovered in 2014 in the Vengerovsky District of the Novosibirsk Region. Currently, the cultural layer is heavily destructed because the entire area of the site is being actively plowed. Over several years of monitoring, we have collected more than twenty ceramic spindle whorl fragments. Six of them are intact; the rest are in the various states ofpreservation and can be reconstructed. This paper proposes the classification of the new artifacts as an addition to a typological classification of ceramic spindle whorls from the Sargat culture proposed by M.A. Chemyakina and L.N. Mylnikova based on materials from Om-1 site (Early Iron Age, Baraba forest-steppe). All the discovered spindle whorls are ceramic and can be included into one group according to the material they are made from, which is clay. Within this group, they can be further subdivided into two categories: those made from raw clay and those carved from fragments of ceramic vessels. The type of spindle whorls depends on the shape and morphological features of the object. Mentioned objects also can be classified by the shape: cylindrical, conical, biconic (consisting of two cones), orflattened with an oval cross-section. The subtype depends on the upper platform design: 1 - the platform is flat and not decorated, and 2 -the platform has a concave shape and is decorated with an edging or step. The bottom part design also varies - they can be elongated and pointed, shortened and rounded, straight (flat), and even teardropshaped, depending on the specifics of object. The use of materials from the settlement of Om-1 expanded the typological classification and identified similar and distinguishing features of these two sites in Baraba forest-steppe.
