Cinema and cinematography in J. Kerouac’s novel “On the road”

The article is devoted to analyzing a seminal novel “On the Road” by the beatnik writer J. Kerouac. The aim is to identify and describe peculiarities of the author’s artistic world, implemented as “cinematographic property” elements. Within the framework of the article, this term describes the specificity of the images and motifs correlating with the world of cinema. Using those in the process of analyzing the text of this novel can significantly enrich the perception of Kerouac’s work for modern readers. The writer generously incorporates into the fabric of the narrative references to famous actors of his time and their iconic roles, as well as the typical plots and genre features of movies that were popular at the time of the novel’s creation. Over time, the movie allusions evident to the beatnik generation need to be further deciphered. For this purpose, a qualitative analysis of the English-language text of the novel was carried out in two stages. First, employing the function of search for the keywords “movie” and “Hollywood”, episodes that have a connection to these concepts were identified. Then, selected fragments of the text, which are the most indicative in the context of the article, were additionally analyzed. As a result of such research work, it is noted that Kerouac boldly uses familiar to his generation movie images, making the descriptions of his own characters more vivid. In addition, the plot twists and cross-cutting themes of the narrative take on an additional subtext meaning that manifests itself on a visual and textual levels. References to the world of cinema allow the author to experiment with genre standards, creatively reworking literary and cinematic traditions of the United States
