During the archaeological excavations at Phanagoria (site “Lower City”), a small hoard of bronze coins was discovered. A purse containing ten Bosporan and Pontic coins of the Mithradatic time was hidden in a cache under a small stone near the base of wall of the destroyed building. Apart from two chalkoy, all resting coins are the obols and tetrachalkoy minted at Panticapaeum, Amisus, Chabacta, and Sinope. The purse most likely belonged to a Pontic mercenary and was concealed during the anti-Mithradatic uprising in Phanagoria in 63 BC.
