Clinical features and assessment of suicide severity among persons having attempted suicide through poisoning

The purpose of the study was to research clinical features and level of suicide risk among persons who had suicide attempts through poisoning. There were 102 patients who participated in a study. The control group consisted of 35 patients who had injured themselves with a sharp objects. As a separate group, 43 patients were examined by the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS) and by the Screening Questionnaire of Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry. Among patients who attempted suicide through poisoning were often diagnosed with an adjustment disorder (49.0%) and mental disorders due to alcohol use (37.2%). There was a smaller proportion of patients with paranoid schizophrenia (7,8%) and depressive disorders (5,9%). Retrospective study of period before suicide revealed that among 43 patients examined by the Screening Questionnaire of Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry, there were found symptoms of affective spectrum disorders which occurred at least once during a month before suicide attempt through poisoning. With the help of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), it was possible to assess the severity of suicide and determine the level of suicide risk.
