In order to study the characteristics of the local and general cellular immune response, immunological and cytological studies were performed in 34 patients with polyposis ethmoiditis and in 12 healthy individuals. The results of the studies showed that in patients with polyposis ethmoiditis before surgery and 5-6 days after surgical removal of polyps, there is a significant decrease in the number of T and B lymphocytes, the functional activity of peripheral blood lymphocytes and neutrophils, as well as the hemolytic activity of the complement system. Rhinocytological and cytological studies of removed polyps revealed a large number of destructive epithelial cells, activated neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, lymphocytes and degranulated mast cells. The relative content of B-lymphocytes in the cell suspension of the removed polyps was significantly higher than the content of T-lymphocytes. We have also revealed that T and B lymphocytes, as well as neutrophils in suspension of removed polyps, have increased functional activity, which is expressed in enhancing the blast transformation of lymphocytes in cell culture. Our results suggest that in the pathogenesis of polypo formation, violation of the regulation of general and local immunity, leading to local hyperactivation of immunocompetent cells, can be of great importance.
