Clinical and pathogenetic relationship between adult-onset asthma and metabolic syndrome components

Asthma is one of the most actual problems of modern medicine. In recent years, many studies have shown that metabolic syndrome (MS) is an important factor in determining the risk and severity of asthma. The aim of our work was to study the clinical and pathogenetic relationship between adult-onset asthma and MS components. The presence of MS is shown to be associated with a more severe course of asthma. According to our data, the only component of MS associated with the development of asthma, is an arterial hypertension. Patients with asthma (with and without MS) showed increased serum concentrations of leptin and endothelin-1, which confirms their probable pathogenetic role in the development of asthma.
