The article considers the questions connected with the unauthorized tonsure of Prince Peter M. Shcheniatev in Rostov Borisoglebsky Monastery in the first year of Oprichnina. The author specifies the time of taking monastic vows of Prince Peter (November-December 1565) and the reasons causing his departure to a provincial Rostov monastery. The author puts forward a hypothesis about influence of this tonsure on the further relations of the Borisoglebsky Monastery and tsar Ivan IV the Terrible. This article is an extended version of the author’s presentation given at the XXX Scientific Conference “History and culture of the Rostov Land” (Rostov Veliky, «Rostov Kremlin» State Museum-Reserve, November 11-13, 2020).
