The reviewed monograph of the reader of the Department of English Philology of St.Petersburg State University A.G.Minchenkov «Cognition and Heuristic in Translation Activity» is a study of translation in the cognitive aspect. This perspective is new in modern Translation Study and is in the process of formation. The reviewed monograph opens a discussion on the nature of translation from the viewpoint of the translator that results in the working out of new concepts. The author deals with the essence of a cognitive conception of translation (chapter 3), considers philosophical foundations of translation theory (chapter 2) and estimates linguistic translation theories (chapter 1). The author of the monograph works out a cognitive conception of translation based on historical principles enabling to notice the sources of modern translation theory.
