This article aims to give a cognitive linguistic account of the operations engaged in the diachronic formation of the meaning of argument-predicate relative adjectives. The operation of specificity is used for constructing the meanings of relative adjectives in explicational combinations. In elisional combinations the operation of focusing is used. For the study of derivational meanings the mechanism of integration of mental spaces is applied.
