At the end of 1861, one of the ladies-in-waiting introduced the Empress Maria Alexandrovna to Kokhanovskaya’s story “Kirila Petrov and Nastas’ia Dmitrova” and told about the writer’s poverty. The Empress wished to send her money, but she was convinced that this would offend the writer. Then a precious brooch was sent to her. With a letter of thanks began the curious story of the contacts of N. S. Sokhanskaya with the House of Romanovs. The article publishes three of her letters to the Empress (1862-1864).
