Collective memory and history in the context of the narrative approach

Бесплатный доступ

The concepts of «collective memory» and «history» have been at the forefront of discussions in the humanities for almost a century. However, their boundaries remain blurred, and that is why attempts are constantly being made to bring them closer. Are these attempts justified? The authors of this article tried to answer this question, relying on the analysis of the concepts of Maurice Halbwachs and Pierre Nora. They also turned to the methodological potential of narratology, projecting on its conceptual grid the similarities and differences between «collective memory» and «history» articulated in the specialized literature. According to the authors, it is the appeal to narratology that allows us to justify the opinion, according to which «collective memory» and «history», despite a deep mutual connection, represent two different and, in some cases, opposite phenomena.
