The paper deals with some issues of the Russian Empire policy carried in the XVIII century on steppe with respect to the head of the Kazakh state, Ablai khan. The paper demonstrated a variety of diplomatic contacts, elaboration of certain forms of relations. Winning over the Kazakh nobility to the side of the Russian Empire, keeping an expanding track of their political interactions - all these prepared the ground for elimination of the institute of khan's power that allowed the tsarism to consolidate in the region.
