Commemorative Space as a Historical Source for the Formation of Memory of Revolutionary Events (1917–1922) in the City of Tyumen

Nowadays there is a growing interest in commemorative spaces, which is especially noticeable in the course of researching the problems of historical memory and identity. In this article the author’s definition of commemorative space is given, the possibilities of its use as a historical source in the study of collective memory and identity are indicated. On the materials of the city of Tyumen the process of formation and practice of application of commemorative spaces in different historical epochs as a historical source, which absorbed spatial and socially significant information about what happened, is presented. It is established that commemorative practices dedicated to the Revolution and the Civil War had a significant impact on the formation of identity and historical memory. It has been revealed: the memorial landscape of Tyumen testifies to the tragedy of what was experienced during the years of revolutionary changes, it has an emotional impact on people, encouraging them to reflect on their experi-ences, to realize the past from the perspective of collective memory and identity, thus contributing to the reduction of social conflict over the revolutionary events of 1917–1922.
