The article focuses on the categorial analysis of such terms as “competence” and “competency” and results of the analysis are interpreted in the context of an academic process. The interrelation of notions “meaning”, “judgment”, “notion” and “knowledge”, revealed during the analysis, creates, in author’s opinion, a condition for employing an innovative ontogenetic approach which forms a notional platform of cognition instead of knowledge-based one among the students.
