The article presents working experience of the Department of Teaching Methods in Biology, Chemistry and Natural Sciences of Southern Federal University, Rostov-on-Don, in biology teachers professional competence formation. Organization of professional development courses is based on competency-based approach to the content and results of biology teachers training. We understand the competency-based approach to professional pedagogical education as a unified system for determining aims, content, organizational and technological support of the teacher professional development by determining special, general and key competencies. This system guarantees the high level of professional competence learning and effectiveness of professional teacher activity. The peculiarity of the professional development program is the module approach to construction and organization of the learning process which is the effective means of biology teachers professional development.
