The article discusses the features of the use of metaphor in political discourse. The Metaphor, Political Linguistics, Political Discourse concepts are designated. The types and functions of metaphor in political discourse are studied. The aim of the work is to identify the current trends of the use of metaphors caused by changes in modern political discourse. To solve various pragmatic tasks: to attract the attention of the audience, encourage it to certain actions, discredit a political opponent, etc., a politician frequently uses a metaphor in his/her speeches. The latter contributes to the creation of a capacious, bright, memorable image that has an impact on the target audience. Metaphor as a natural way of thinking is a rich material for cognitive understanding of language, the linguistic picture of the world, the interaction of linguistic phenomena and human consciousness. The use of metaphorical units is aimed at influencing the consciousness of communication of the participants; in particular, the use of metaphor has an impact on the value and ideological orientations of the recipient, depending on the intentions of the sender of the message. The authors of the article present the most frequent metaphorical models used in political discourse.
