The article discusses the features of musical communication in the XX century. In this period the harmony of mutual relations of artist and audience seems to be broken. The creative works of the avant-garde composers were perceived with difficulties by the listeners, because of the unusualness of the musical language, the novelty of means of expression. The author sees the reason of it in the transformation of the subject of the first half of the XX century and the change of the nature of inter-subject relations of a composer and a listener. Structuralism became the principle of formal organization of a creative work, as well as its analysis. The research also analyses structuralist interpretation of the modernist culture as a whole and musical culture in particular, its polyglotism, the role of art communication in the self-awareness of culture.
