The article touches upon the problem of Dostoevsky and the Church. Views of some researchers on the specified problem are considered, the position of F. M. Dostoevsky (his relation to belief) is designated. The authors of the article tried to reveal to the modern reader some aspects of the worldview of F. M. Dostoevsky as an Orthodox believer, in particular - the concept of «punishment» in the picture of the world of the writer. The material for the study was the gospel texts and the novel «Crime and punishment». The article describes the features of the reflection of the concept of «punishment» in the picture of the world of the believer, the ways of representation of the concept of «punishment» in the novel. The result of the study was the construction of the field of the concept of «punishment», reflected in the title of the novel and its text, and the description of the structure of this field, the components of which are the different meanings of the concept of «punishment». In conclusion, the role of the concept of «punishment» in the picture of the world of the Orthodox believer and the leading meaning of this concept are defined.
