The article analyzes the representation of the concepts of “sorrow” and “joy” in the psalms in the Church Slavonic language. The importance of the Church Slavonic Psalter for the Russian Orthodox Church is noted. The Psalter is one of the main biblical books through which believers are introduced to many theological ideas. And consequently, an interdisciplinary approach is needed in the study of the Church Slavonic Psalter. Obviously, an incorrect understanding of the concepts of “sorrow” and “joy” can lead to spiritual illnesses. The Psalter reflects the biblical view of this problem. The concepts analyzed in the article have a wide lexical-semantic field in the psalms, its actualization allows to systematize and interpret the theological ideas related to the topic under study, which may go unnoticed by the reader of the biblical book. The philological analysis of the psalms makes it possible to identify problems important for theological understanding, one of which is the meaning of the concepts under consideration and their opposition. As a result of the study, it is concluded that for the authors of the Psalter, both joy and sorrow are natural states, but these feelings must be contained in God.
