The article examines one of the masterpieces of 19th-century Russian literature. Attention is given to allusions, citations, reworking of themes and plots, and paraphrasing - elements of the postmodern concept of intertextuality. Works by authors who, in one way or another, “rework” the same themes and issues are compared. The conclusion is drawn that forms of literary intertextuality were also characteristic of classical literature.
