H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic pessimism and some parallels to it

The article examines the problem of the philosophy of cosmic pessimism as it is presented in the works of the American writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft. The mechanical-materialistic background of his worldview is shown and the idea of the fundamental discrepancy between the human cognitive apparatus and the material structure of the Universe is analyzed. Lovecraft’s philosophical ideas are compared with some motifs in the novel by the Soviet science fiction writer S. Pavlov “Moon Rainbow”.
