The article is dedicated to the professional activities of the investigator. It assesses the professional, intellectual and volitional qualities of the investigator, their implementation in various situations. The author pays attention to the main problems taking place in this sphere. The article describes the means to fill the gaps in the training of the investigator. Among them, an important place is occupied by forensic algorithmization. The degree of informatization of the investigation is increased due to the need to strength the link between science and practice. Also, it is necessary to solve the problem of eliminating the gap between the practice of crime investigation with the digital component and the theory of criminalistics. Another task is to develop and integrate standardized criminalistics recommendations based on certain algorithm of investigator's activities. The author considers the actual problems associated with forensic education in law schools: material and technical support of departments, personnel matters, the implementation of practical orientation in the training of students, the introduction of digital technologies in the educational process, the need to increase the hours of teaching criminalistics. Possible ways of solving the analyzed problems are proposed.
