Criminological Characteristics of Illegal Logging

The article considers criminological characteristics of illegal logging, including an analysis of the criminal identity, crime time and place, target of crime. Particular attention is paid to the circumstances and methods of committing the illegal acts, in particular, the choice of forest plots, types of wood, and logging methods. We have analyzed main motives and mechanisms of preparation for crimes. The study is aimed at identifying patterns and factors contributing to the commission of this type of environmental crimes, which makes it possible the development of effective measures to prevent and combat illegal logging. We have revealed regional features of this type of crime and analyzed the correlation between the level of socioeconomic development of regions and the scale of illegal logging. The article also focuses on the role of corruption and organized crime groups in the commission of these offences. Based on the data obtained, we have proposed specific recommendations for improving the system of state control over forest management and increasing the effeciency of law enforcement in combating environmental crimes.
