The article considers the problem of differentiation of introductory words and adverbs, the author suggests criteria, enabling to define, which syntactic position the linguistic unit ending in –o occupies in a sentence – adverbial or parenthetical. Studying the functioning of lexemes ending in -o, the author substantiates the necessity of introducing the notion «modus predicative».
