The article considers approaches to branding of territories (cities and countries). In the paper, the necessity of differentiating branding types according to their objects (trademarks, cultural phenomena) and refusing to distribute marketing and image branding technologies to cultural spheres and, in general, territorial entities that have their own specifics is substantiated
