We analyzed the origin of the names of the chemical elements of the periodic table of D.I. Mendeleev in the article. We found that out of 118 chemical elements, 19 elements (16%) are of Latin origin. Among the words-progenitors of the names of chemical elements, 4 groups can be distinguished - «substance», «property», «color», «geography», the dominant of which is the latter (47%). Latin names of chemical elements are mainly derived from nouns (84%), adjectives (11%) and one verb (5%).
