Life as stream of visualization of human feelings

My project "STREAM & LIFE" is an experiment to visualize human feelings - innermost emotions and consciousness deep inside of human mind - by photographing the water stream. The water stream never stops and transforms all the time. Human feelings are also changing through time and never be the same again. Water stream would be the best material to visualize the essence of ambiguous feelings and consciousness without any shape originally. Many different shades of white on stream were caused by reflection. Human feelings are also generated as a reaction to something. Transforming white with shade on 3 photographs shows a slight emotional shift and strength of emotion. The shades of white generated by the combination of photography and stream make possible to visualize human feelings. 3 photographs were taken from the exactly same part of the stream without moving camera at different times.

Visualization of human feelings. It is an experiment of trying to shape something very delicate, vague and elusive. Human emotions and consciousness are really easy to change, and it is difficult for us to grasp accurately. If these are roughly classified and verbalized, for example, it will be expressions such as “anger”, “sadness”, “surprise”, and “concentration” that we already use daily.

In reality, however, human emotions sway over time, and the boundaries between other types of emotions are not clear, and it is very difficult to grasp and express.

Arts is mode of transformation of living practice [3; 5]. I try to show this way in some my photographical works, including experience of visualization of traditional culture in Uzbekistan [1, 2, 4].

Water stream. The existence of water is inseparable from life. Water, the root of life, has no sharp shape and never stays in the same place in the stream. That is just like human feelings. In that sense, I think that it the most suitable subject in a natural subject to replace and describe human feelings. Where there is a drop, where there are rocky obstacles, where its winds, and so on ... By shooting various water-drawing scenes, very delicate and ambiguous depictions are possible.

White. The color "white" is often interpreted as colorless, blank, or nothing. But in photography, white means the intensity of light. The subject appears whitish because the camera captures a lot of light from that area. It can be said that the whiter the light is, the stronger the light is reflected. I use this whiteness to express the strength of human emotions generated as a reaction to things. Bright white stands out in photography and it is the opposite of some general images of white, such as nothing and blank.

Water is also recognized as transparent and colorless, but it can be expressed as various types of white when photographed. That would be a good example of how we can change the impression we have unconsciously by simply changing the way we express.

Display. 3 photos were taken without changing the shooting range at all, that is, without moving the camera. The shooting timing is just different. Since it is difficult to express subtle changes in feelings with a single still image, three photos will be displayed side by side. It is both intended to have three photos at a time insight and to compare one by one.
