The paper demonstrates the aspects of the state literacy policy implemented in relation to the female population in Bashkiria in the 1920s. The eradication of female illiteracy is regarded as an essential prerequisite for the cultural revolution. Without universal literacy, a woman could not start a new life. The paper notes the enormous difficulties and problems faced by the government and public organizations in the course of their work. The emphasis is placed on the activities of women's units having involved women in the eradication of illiteracy. In the 1920s, progress had been made in the campaign against illiteracy. However, despite significant achievements, this task hindered by objective and subjective reasons (the need to overcome patriarchal prejudices and conservative views of the population, the lack of teachers, textbooks) could not be quickly solved.
