The article examines linguistic knowledge as the basis of intercultural communicative competence. An attempt is made to prove that in the modern world it is intercultural communication that is becoming an integral part of international relations, business, education and everyday communication. This article highlights the role of foreign language proficiency in the process of intercultural communication and mutual understanding. Attention is focused on the fact that language proficiency surpasses the simple ability to communicate, becoming the basis for achieving an understanding of cultural differences and peculiarities. In this article, the author highlights such aspects of intercultural communication as mutual understanding, empathy, improving the quality of communication and personal development through the prism of languages, as well as provides examples indicating the importance of the described topic.
