The article analyses the specificity of poetics of an English poet and writer of political essays John Milton, which combines antique and Christian traditions. The specificity of the combination of the two traditions is traced with the example of interpenetration the genre of pastoral and the genre of religious poetry - the psalm. The interaction of the two genres began in early works of the poet in his attempt to make pastoral images more complicated because of implied Christian ideas. At the end of creative development of Milton, in the poem «Paradise Lost», biblical heroes will be placed in a pastoral garden and the liturgic text of psalms will sound in their prayers.
