The article deals with basic logical and philosophical conceptions of the modality category. The author reviews in detail interpretations of modality by such scientists as Aristotle, D. Scotus, I. Kant, G.W. Leibniz, and considers correlation of linguistics and philosophy in the context of research of the modality category.
