The research problem and the rationale for its relevance. The new progressive resource of additional professional education of pedagogical personnel-mass open online courses (MOOC) are justified in this article. Digital society and digital generation require the use of rich digital sources in education. Well-selected, structured and adapted content will help to saturate the independent work of listeners with high-quality multimedia information, new types of communications, and dynamic support. The goal of research is to substantiate the feasibility of a model of productive professional development of teachers. Methodology (materials and methods). The author analyzes the works of researchers in this field and the experience of its practical application in order to study the rationality of using MOOC in the process of mastering additional professional training programs. The author actualizes the formats and opportunities of learning through the global network. The factors that turn mass open online courses into a platform for professional development of teachers are analyzed. Structural model of MOOC reveals. Benefits of massive open online courses: massive and globality; free access; to attract teachers of the most prestigious universities; rich, brief presentation of theory; multimedia learning materials; the latest interactive information technology; mutual verification of assignments; intercultural learning; gamification, isolated and characterized. Disadvantages of MOOC: the lack of direct communication; technical difficulties; the complexity of building a course; the requirement of a high level of IT competence among students; insufficient command of the English language; complexity self-organization of students, etc., identified and reasoned. Experience of the introduction of targeted MOOC in the system of professional development of teachers are analyzed. The scientific novelty consists in the fact that on the basis of the performed research, a model of open online courses for improving the skills of teaching staff has been constructed, and promising directions for their use in the system of additional professional education have been proposed. The theoretical significance of the study lies in the analytical compilation and refinement of the theoretical basis for the use of MOOC in the implementation of additional professional programs. The practical value is to develop and implement three mass online courses, identifying their advantages and disadvantages. Results. Tracking the effectiveness of innovations allowed us to draw a conclusion about their demand, effectiveness and prospects in the system of additional professional education of teachers.
