In the article one of the most popular novels of E. Gaskell "Cranford" (1853) is discussed. Special attention is paid to the literary means that are used to reveal motherhood as one of the most important themes in authors works. The correlation between maternity and such themes as unfulfilled hopes and woman's fate is also analyzed.
