The article is devoted to the relationship between language consciousness and the linguistic unconscious in the process of realizing the meaning of communication. The narrow and broad notion of meaning is delineated. It is proved that the language consciousness is acquired through the language ability inherent in a person from birth as the ability to understand and master the world around. The linguistic unconscious is structured and implemented by a topic, understood as a system of structural-meaning models of the generation of communicative sense; introduces the concept of mental-language topology. It is argued that the formation of language consciousness is primarily related not to grammatical and/or lexical, but to semantic categories. It is proved that language proficiency is not the same as speech proficiency, but an understanding of the meaning of communication, not identical to understanding the content of information. Understanding as the most important part of communication, first of all, testifies to the proficiency of the language, and in this sense the language is spoken not only by people, but also by animals. The study of language consciousness, according to the author, should be conducted at the level of understanding of the meaning of communication and taking into account the presence in the language of not only aware, but also unconscious phenomena and processes.
