The article is devoted to the history of the existence of measured icons in the royal, and then in the imperial family of the Romanovs. The article reconstructs the chronology of the existence of icons, the motivation for their appearance. The tradition of painting measured icons, which originated in the middle of the 16th century, existed in the royal and then the imperial family, until the beginning of the 20th century. The measured icon was perceived primarily as a protective one, and accompanied the monarchs until the end of their lives. This tradition was one of the spiritual bonds that connected the imperial family with the traditions of the Moscow kingdom.
