The dynamic process of formation and development of economic terminology is initiated by the rapid market transformations of the economy, which first absorbs new conceptual and terminological meta-units (concepts, terms and general conceptions, etc.), used to describe economic processes, and then leads to the process of term forma-tion. The aim of the study is to give a systematic characterization of the meta-language of economics and finance from the point of view of modern directions of linguistic research. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the development of a new approach to the understanding of meta-language as a tool reflecting the specifics of economic and financial discourses, as well as in the identification of its influence on the formation of the linguistic profile of an economist. To-day, there is a tendency to the convergence of many spheres of human activity, and this entails the inevitability of lan-guage interaction in the system of world economy. The expansion of international contacts in this sphere leads to the need to improve the system of information transfer, hence, mutual harmonization of lexical units belonging to different parts of financial and economic terminology. As a result of the study, the key elements of the meta-language, its role in the interpretation of economic concepts and notions were identified, and recommendations for improving communica-tion in the field of economics and finance through lexicographic and semantic methods were proposed.
