The paper considers examples of solving olympiad problems and criteria for their assessment. The tasks that are offered to the participants of the olympiads are somewhat different from the typical school tasks. The main characteristic feature of the olympiad problem is its non-standard nature, that is, its external dissimilarity to typical problems. To solve most olympiad problems, knowledge of material is almost never required, the study of which is not provided for by school programs in physics and mathematics. However, solving olympiadic physical problems requires the ability to build physical models, a deep understanding of physical laws, the ability to independently apply them in various situations, as well as fluency in the mathematical apparatus.
