One of the highest dignitaries of the Russian Empire, the governor and director of the Department of Spiritual Affairs, George Boleslavovich Petkevich, had an unusual and tragic fate. Despite his social background and previous career, he sincerely started to serve the Soviet government, and in the first post-revolutionary years he held senior economic posts. At the same time, he remained a deeply religious man, was arrested several times and was eventually shot in 1937. In the last years of his life, he was chairman of the parish council and caretaker of St. Nicholas Epiphany Cathedral in Leningrad (St. Petersburg). The article was prepared on the basis of previously unknown archival documents.
