International legal cooperation on the use and pollution protection of transboundary water resources in Africa

The article deals with the question of international legal cooperation of the states on the use and pollution protection of the transboundary water resources in Africa. As an example of such cooperation the Lake Tanganyika basin is analyzed, as well as the legal framework of one of the riparian states - the Republic of Burundi. The adoption of conventions, the establishment of the joint bodies for the transboundary water resources management as well as the implementation at the national level of the international standards are of great importance. Methods: in this article the common scientific research methods are used, such as analysis, synthesis, comparison, and special methods such as formal and legal, technical and legal ones. The authors have analyzed the question of the international cooperation in the field of use and protection of the transboundary water resources in Africa, the joint bodies for managing the transboundary water resources, the Convention on the sustainable management of the Lake Tanganyika, as well as the national legislation of the Republic of Burundi in this area. Conclusions: the adoption of the international legal instruments on the use and protection of the transboundary water resources, the establishment of the joint bodies and the implementation of the international legal standards at the national level play an important role in achieving the efficient and sustainable management of the transboundary water resources in Africa.
