This text presents an analysis of doctrinal opinions on the role of private international law in the legal system. The existing approaches are conditionally classified into three groups: national, international and polysystem. The views of such scientists as V.F. Popondopulo, V.A. Belov, R.Y. Kolobov, G.K. Dmitrieva and M.N. Kuznetsov are considered in a special order. As a result of the reflections, a reasonable conclusion is drawn that private international law is an integral part of civil (private) law, while conflict-of-laws rules are considered as specialized.
