The article discusses the main stages of the creation and development of an international system for protecting the rights of children. The authors draw attention to the need to correlate the international mechanism of children's rights and freedoms with regional and national mechanisms. The protection of the rights of the child is an integral part of the international mechanism for the protection of human rights. According to the authors, there is a lack of research practice in the study of the mechanism for protecting the rights of children, including in the domestic state-legal science. The study was conducted on the basis of an analysis of a wide range of global international documents adopted by both the main UN bodies and specialized agencies of the UN system. The mechanism for the international protection of children's rights is a combination of international legal principles and norms enshrining the rights and freedoms of the child, the obligations of states to ensure and realize these rights and freedoms, as well as international systems for monitoring the implementation of these obligations. The article also carried out a scientific analysis of the basic principles of international legal protection of children's rights. The directions of the development of institutions and subsystems of international legal regulation in the field of protecting the rights of the child are determined.
