The purpose of the article is research the poem "The Grand Inquisitor" by Fedor Dostoevsky as a pretext of the story "In another country" (1910), Aleksei Zolotarev, the writer who was part of the circle of Knowledge and Maksim Gorky’s Capri circle. The artistic reception of the poem "The Grand Inquisitor" is interesting because in his story Zolotarev reflected the man’s reflections of the beginning of the 20th century about the fate of Russia. The writer enters into a polemic with Vasilii Rozanov and Gorky as interpreters of the poem "The Grand Inquisitor". For Gorky in the poem of Ivan Karamazov the main idea is the need for strong power for a weak person, for Rozanov the main idea of this poem is the uselessness of redemption because of the weakness of human nature, disbelief in God and man. Zolotarev includes reflections on the poem "The Grand Inquisitor" in the speech of the hero of the story, the Polish exiled Pan Julius, addressed to the Russian exiled Vetrov. Pan Julius seeks to point out to his young listener the dangers that lie in wait for the Russian people, while he turns to the same influencing tactics as the Grand Inquisitor. The evangelical precedent situation is recreated, which is reinterpreted by Zolotarev: the kiss of the Captive is correlated with the kiss of Judas. Zolotarev polemics with Rozanov and Gorky and returns to Dostoevsky's idea about the manifestation of true human freedom is faith in God. The poem about the Inquisitor is contrasted with the legend of the Apostle Peter, who voluntarily accepts martyrdom for the faith. At the same time, Zolotarev calls on the Russian people not to rise above other nations, but to strive for Slavic unity, to unite faith with scientific knowledge (Prometheus Fire) and love for the Fatherland.
