The application of the category of narrative palimpsest allows us to see how the meaning of a literary work is determined by its orientation to the classical tradition. In some cases, this influence can be decisive. The palimpsest nature of the work manifests itself at different levels of its structure, among other things, at the level of the spatial-temporal organization of the text. How this happens is explored in this article on the material of K. Yarmysh’s novel “Incredible Incidents in the Women’s Cell No. 3” - the “prison” theme stated in the title makes it clear how important chronotopic characteristics will be in the text. It is noteworthy that the chrono-tope of Siberia as a liminal area, a country of eternal winter and night, inhabited by chthonic deities, where a person goes through existential trials, is almost not directly reproduced in the work under study - the plot unfolds in Moscow in the summer. But indirectly, dotted - in the memories (from her youth she used to think of Siberia as a place closed to the eyes of an outsider, mythical, legendary) and the dreams of the main character - it is undoubtedly present, actualizing precisely after she was taken into custody. This is especially noticeable when particular fragments of the text are superimposed on similar fragments of predecessor texts, which are the most famous works in Russian literature on the topic of serving a punishment: “The House of the Dead” by Fyodor Dostoevsky, “Resurrection” by Leo Tolstoy and “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich” by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.
