In modern Orthodox subcultures of the fundamentalist type, the idea of three echelons is popular, in which, during the persecutions of the Antichrist, the Orthodox will be deported from the cities to the wild places of the North. These ideas are often reproduced in eschatological texts, and the phrase “three echelons” has already passed the main stages of terminological formation. This article is devoted to the analysis of these views. The author examines the allegorical and literal understanding of this mythological theological term, shows its historical roots, syncretic nature and the specifics of its semantic structure. The article is written within the framework of a semeo- hermeneutic analysis of religious texts.
