The study of migration in the Vologda Oblast is a popular topic of research, since the inability to control migration leads to changes in the population quantity and quality, the disruption of demographic balance, and requires management. Only statistical studies of the main trends of migration in the region does not give a complete representation of the migration process (migration attitudes and adaptation). Only a comprehensive examination of a migration process using sociological methods will allow to assess this phenomenon. The aim of the article is to analyze migration and migration attitudes of the residents of the Vologda Oblast. The study is performed on the basis of the statistical data on migratory movements provided by the Federal State Statistics Service, the census of 2002 and 2010, as well as the next stage of the sociological monitoring of living conditions evaluation, conducted in 2019 by the Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is determined that since the 1990s migration has not been making a significant contribution to the population dynamics in the region, since 2012 the migration balance has been negative and aggravated to the natural decline of the population. Internal migration is prevailing in the migration exchange, the CIS countries determine almost 90% of the balance of the international flows. The population of the Vologda Oblast is almost by 14% made up by the natives of other constituent entities of the RF, the maximum share comes from the neighboring Arkhangelsk, Yaroslavl and Murmansk regions. The migration attitudes of the region's population are revealed. 14% of the population expressed a desire to leave the region; the reasons for moving are the standards and quality of life. Sedentism is explained by sociocultural reasons, i.e. the love of native land, the proximity of relatives. Along with the material and housing problems that has not been resolved at the new place of living, these factors play a leading role in return migration. The research findings may be of practical interest for researchers in the field of demography, migration and sociology, as well as the representatives of governments implementing demographic, migration and social policy.
