The article is devoted to the consideration of practical and theoretical aspects of the merciful ministry of the Orthodox St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris. The focus is on the pre-war period of the institute. There are the testimonies of the founders, teachers, and graduates of the institute - M. M. Osorgin, protopriest Sergius Bulgakov, protopresbyter Vasily Zenkovsky, G. P. Fedotov, B. P. Vysheslavtsev, bishop Methodius (Kuhlmann), protopresbyter Ioann Meyendorff - about their social activities. The work of the Student Brotherhood in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh, its missionary, enlightening, and merciful ministry is highlighted. We consider the formulation of a social problem in the process of teaching. This problem is revealed both in the conditions of Soviet Russia, and in the conditions of Russian emigration and in Church life in general. The relevance and importance of teaching social (charity) activity in modern theological education is emphasized
