Many stories of one science(on different genres in the history of archaeology)

In the opinion of the author, historiography of archaeology is the history ofstudying specific sites and archaeological cultures while the history of archaeology muststudy archaeological science per se in all aspects from underlying ideas and concepts tospecific issues. Historiography and history of archaeology cannot exist separated fromeach other. A number of genres are singled out in the history of archaeology. Institutionalarchaeology is the history of institutions, i. e. various organizations whose scope ofactivities covered archaeology fully or in part. Social history looks at the developmentof archaeological science through the prism of social and political history, i. e. its linkswith the powers that be, activities of archaeologies to fulfill the 'social order' of society.Intellectual history is the history of archaeological ideas and theories. The history ofschools of thought is a separate area, only several papers are dedicated to this issue inRussian archaeology. Cultural stories examine the history of archaeology in its connectionwith the culture of different periods. The genre of regional stories of archaeology thatcontain overviews of science development in specific regions is well represented. Thematicstories are dedicated to the history of evolvement and development of specific areas ofarchaeology or history of studying specific sites. The history of archaeology is rich inpapers and books written in the biographical genre (half of all publications in this area).Publication of documentary sources is one of the major tasks in studying the history ofarchaeology at the present. Reference literature on the history of archaeology is notadequately represented. The situation with popular science literature of high qualityaimed at a wider audience is quite bad.
