The article examines a new book by Alexander Kotov, dedicated to the “forgotten conservatives” of the second half of the 19th century. The main characters in this book are M. N. Katkov, Yu. F. Samarin, I. S. Aksakov, I. P. Kornilov, M. V. Yuzefovich, V. D. Skaryatin. Of course, many of them can hardly be called “forgotten” at the level of names - oblivion primarily refers to their specific theses, the context of their appearance and discussion in public discussion, to the forgotten lines of demarcation and opposition in the conservative camp. Other forgotten topics include local groups of conservative publicists, which are of interest from the point of view of the logic of including local problems and interests in the general imperial conservative polemics. The conceptual core of the work is an analysis of the class conservatism of the postreform period, first of all, the circle of the newspaper “Vest”. The author demonstrates that by the 1880s, the confrontation between estate (état) conservatism and conservative nationalism was largely removed due to the inclusion of elements of the former in the latter, primarily represented by the late Katkov.
