The problem of formation of competencies of a student involved in project activities is considered. The analysis of studies of foreign and domestic scientists devoted to the organization of project activities of students is given. The key trends, advantages, challenges and prospects of formation and development of student competencies in project activities are revealed. The main requirements for the formation of personal and professional qualities of future specialists are highlighted. The model of formation of competencies is presented, reflecting the requirements for the level of qualification of students - participants of project activities, a set of necessary competencies as an integrated result of mastering the content of education, communication skills and norms of social behavior. The model is designed to solve the problem of development of students' abilities in the process of working on a project. The criteria of readiness of a future specialist to apply the acquired knowledge, skills, abilities and a set of competencies to solve theoretical and practical problems in professional activities are formulated. Approaches to the development of diagnostic tools for assessing the competencies acquired in the process of project activities are shown.
